IL CONTESTO

Ocres du Luberon is a residential oil painting course in the heart of Provence, where colour becomes an amplified sensory experience.

Not many know that the Academy of Fine Arts was founded in Rome by the French in the 17th century, with the aim of persuading artists not to disperse their incredible knowledge of colour and to stop keeping it jealously hidden within their workshops. One of the first directors of the Institute wrote about wanting to encourage a "sensual use of colour," as he believed that the quality of painting coincided with the richness, beauty, and intensity of the colours used. Spending a week in the Luberon, a region that has historically produced extraordinary pigments to supply the fine art shops of Paris, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo, is an excellent way to study the very substance of painting.

Here, in these places where colour is created, among old 19th-century workshops and dusty paths, we will set up our easels and work immersed in nature.

The Programme

The programme consists of a comprehensive 36-hour painting course, guiding participants step by step through the creation of an oil painting—from the initial priming of the canvas to the final application of varnish. To ensure a solid and enriching learning experience, each day includes in-depth yet enjoyable lessons in drawing, painting, and pigment preparation and study. These sessions will take place either in the lush garden of the villa or in carefully selected, inspiring locations such as the Exotic Garden of Eze, the Cap-Ferrat headland, the Fine Arts Gallery in Nice, or the breathtakingly secluded village of Gourdon.
To complement the week and make this holiday truly complete and unforgettable, a series of stimulating activities are included: excursions to ancient villages, visits to galleries and museums, and meetings with artists, collectors, and local gallery owners.

IL SOGGIORNO

Ocres du Luberon will be held in an 18th-century country villa, fully renovated in 2024 using original period materials and furnished with design and antique pieces. The property is five-star and boasts seven double rooms, two lounges, a study-library, kitchen, and dining rooms – all spread across three floors. Outside, the desire to experience summer is fulfilled by a 20-metre panoramic swimming pool, solarium, spacious lawns, and pergolas for dining and painting outdoors.

This dominant estate sits atop a hill, surrounded by vineyards, oak forests, and flowering fields. It is not accessible by public transport, so students are advised to have their own car or rent one.
